Friends came over at 10. We played euchre for three hours (my partner and I won two of the three games). I drank a six-packs worth of beer. Waking up early as hell on my first day off in a long time to pick up Boy at 8:45 for breakfast. Then he works. At least I can go back to bed before tricking all my carnivore friends into eating vegan mac during the Super Bowl. Life is good.

Now I know why I purposely avoided “dating someone exclusively” for so long (coughyearscough): I let shit fuck with my head a little too much. And, no, I’m not one of those crazy girls. I swear. I can’t be alone?

Charlie Trotter's, in 25 Years of Chicago Magazine... →
The above link is something of an abridged history of Trotter’s. And it got me thinking: why has the news of his decision to close the restaurant remained on my mind all week? I wasn’t raised in a culinary family (Red Lobster was fancy) but I’ve been aware of how the other half lives since a very young age. I grew up among the 1%. My young classmates went to Trotter’s with...

New Year's Resolutions are for suckers
You shouldn’t need a new year to make promises to yourself that you will not keep. You can do that any day of the year! So instead of playing “lies Jess told herself,” let’s set some goals! Out with the old // Update my iPod more often Otherwise I honestly don’t have any bad habits to break (seriously: I quit smoking in ‘06, found my dream job in ‘09,...

One teachers approach to preventing gender...
togetherforjacksoncountykids: “It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said:...

modern love
Not love. Definitely not love. Maybe more like lust. Okay more like “I’m keeping you in my pocket for an emergency.” I met a guy at Pitchfork while volunteering. He lives in Champaign, we’ve been keeping in touch and he has actually visited me here in Chicago. Super cool dude and not my usual type (meaning he is almost too good to be true). Problem is… my phone...

It's a plan, Stan.
Part of my ongoing quest to enjoy a plant-based diet means, duh, steering clear of meat and dairy. I have also stopped buying convenience foods: frozen meals (no more Lean Pockets for this gal), most processed foods (was never a big Velveeta fan anyways) and packaged soup (this tomato soup has become a mainstay). No big deal, it’s been easier than I could ever imagine (except when eating...
